IS THERE ROOM IN YOUR HEART FOR CALLIE?

Callie on Picnic Table Can You Believe My Ears?!

Callie is a fighter. And I don't mean she fights. She is a survivor. This little girl has had a hard life and is due for a little R & R and a whole lot of love. And just look at those ears! She would fly if she could!

One evening we received a phone call from a neighbor about a dog on her front porch that had been hit by a car. We ran over to see what was going on and found this little ragged dog shivering with fright and pain. We took her home and confined her in a small crate. We called the police to see if anyone had called in a missing dog fitting this girl's description. No luck. We went to bed, determined to find out more in the morning.

Believe it or not, this dog's owner did call the police looking for her. The daughter-in-law brought this little old lady who'd been staying with family after her husband passed away the week before. Every couple of days, someone would go feed and water "Callie". Callie had been chained at the side door and had gotten loose. Her owner stated she was a Jack Russell Terrier, but we think she has some beagle in her, too. She has a sort of beagle voice.

The next "believe it or not" was that the owner wanted to take Callie home and chain her back up. We convinced them to take her for radiographs. Callie's pelvis and femur were fractured. Not having $400 for surgery, the lady was going to have Callie euthanized. Instead, she allowed us to bring her home to see if she would improve with extended confinement.

That was in January 2002. She was very painful for several days, but slowly her appetite increased and her pain decreased. After about 8 weeks of confinement and anti-inflamatory meds, Callie was on the mend. Today, although she limps a little sometimes, Callie runs and plays and jumps with the other dogs. Occasionally she'll get trampled in the canine melee and squawk a bit. But she's jumps right back in - the little dog with the big heart. As you can see in her photos, she has no trouble getting up on the picnic table and will be in the recliner in a heartbeat if you let her!

Callie is up-to-date on vaccines and has been on heartworm prevention since we've had her. She has not been spayed. She weighs about 15 pounds and is about 6 years old. She doesn't require a lot of extra care; mainly she needs to be in a fenced yard or let outside frequently. Because of her pelvic injuries, she occasionally has bowel accidents. These do not happen often at all and, in fact, have diminished in frequency since she's been spending more time outside in warm weather. As she gets older, she'll need to spend more time inside when it's cold.

Callie is a lover who is just thankful to be alive. She is a very low maintenance girl. She'd be a great companion for another dog. She ignores our cats and loves the attentions she gets from our kids..
